Google Photos brings ‘In the Spotlight’ feature to more users; where’s what it does

The new ‘In the Spotlight’ app feature in Google Photos doesn’t seem to be tied to a particular version.

It looks like Google will continue to remind you of your old photos and protect them again. Just a few days ago, it brought the ‘Cheers’ feature in Google Photos to more users, and now it’s starting to roll out the ‘In the Spotlight’ feature to more users as well. The feature automatically selects the best photos and makes an Instagram-like story slider out of it. The only big difference here, however, is that it only takes the pictures that show the scene and the crowd, something we often see during music performances and plays.

As mentioned in a report by Android Police, the new ‘In the Spotlight’ app feature in Google Photos doesn’t seem to be tied to a particular version. And the feature might only pop up if Google finds enough images of the stage, your photo list.

This is just one of the features that Google is bringing to many users this year. It can be considered the company’s effort to provide the most value to users before it stops free “High Quality” image uploads and starts cutting space from Google Drive.

On a related note, the rumoured Pixel 5a might be missing out on one of the key features – Free High Quality Google Photos upload. One of the Google executives has now confirmed that Pixel 2 to Pixel 5 users will continue to have ‘High Quality’ uploads as free and unlimited, even after June. However, it won’t be the case with ‘future Pixels’ and probably OEM Android handsets.

While this may sound like good news for current Pixel users, it may also push more people to get hold of older Pixel smartphones. It is also worth mentioning that since future Pixel phones will not get this feature, the Pixel 5a (when launched) may not be as popular.
