After many years of waiting, Ash’s Pikachu has achieved a new form in the Pokémon anime, as it can use the Gigantamax form from Pokémon Sword & Shield.
In Pokémon Sword & Shield, the people who have a save file from either of the Let’s Go games will be able to claim either a Pikachu or Eevee that can turn into a Gigantamax Pokémon, rather than using a standard Dynamax form. Gigantamax Pokémon have unique access to incredibly powerful G-Max Moves that they can use in battle. The Gigantamax version of Pikachu looks like the old chubby design of the Pokémon, except that it’s now a giant.
In the latest series of the Pokémon anime, there is currently a World Championships going on and Leon (Champion of the Galar region) has defeated Lance (Champion of the Kanto region) in battle. In the latest episode of the anime, Ash’s Pikachu activates its Dynamax transformation and turns into its Gigantamax form, confirming that it has this rare trait, as not all Pikachu have access to a Gigantamax form. Clips of Ash’s Pikachu can be seen on the Hoennverse Twitter page.
Ash’s Pikachu uses its newfound power to defeat a Gigantamax Drednaw that was sent on a rampage due to the actions of Team Rocket.
The fact that Ash’s Pikachu can achieve a Gigantamax form has raised some questions, as the Gigantamax version of Pikachu in the game cannot evolve into Raichu. Does this mean that Ash’s Pikachu also cannot evolve into Raichu? It’s possible that the anime could ignore this concept, as it only applies to the Let’s Go Pikachu (as well as the Let’s Go Eevee and the free Gigantamax Meowth that was given away to early adopters of Pokémon Sword & Shield).
The fans were wondering if Ash’s Pikachu would use the Dynamax power-up at all in the latest season of the anime, as it was confirmed that Ash would be traveling to different regions and wouldn’t go on a full journey in Galar. Now that Ash has a Gigantamax Pikachu, it’s possible that he could continue his winning streak and be the first person to defeat Leon in the anime.
