The request doesn’t seem to be going well, but there might be something to the fight.

There’s a little bit of smoke — maybe a lot of smoke — around a possible fight between Devin Haney and Adrien Broner at the moment, as the two sides have posted various bits on Instagram, one of which is Eddie Hearn posting a screenshot DM request for $20 million from Broner.

Nothing real big here, mind you, just an idea floated into the social media world. Maybe something to get the conversation started and manufacture buzz around a fight that’s already in the works, you never know, boxing promotion in the social media age is wild as hell.

Broner’s response drew some laughs from fellow fighters Errol Spence Jr, Hank Lundy, Anthony Dirrell, and Rau’shee Warren.

.Then the kicker came: Haney’s promoter Eddie Hearn posting a DM request from Broner for $20 million, with Broner saying he’ll even make 135 pounds for the fight.

Hearn replies, “Forget the ($20 million) and you aren’t making 135, but if you want to talk, (Haney) said name your weight, he is ready to go!” In one of the comments on the post, Haney says, “I will send him into retirement!”

The 21-year-old Haney (24-0, 15 KO) is currently out due to shoulder surgery, and when he had the procedure done in December, the expectation was he’d be out six months. He won the interim WBC lightweight title last September, then was elevated to full title status for a November defense (Vasiliy Lomachenko was bumped to “franchise champion”), and is currently “champion in recess,” with the now-vacant actual WBC title set to be contested between Luke Campbell and Javier Fortuna at some point.

The 30-year-old Broner (33-4-1, 24 KO) has won world titles in four weight divisions, but the circumstances behind the title wins were generally iffy, and even with all his success, it’s hard from a boxing standpoint to not see his career as something of a disappointment, given the level of hype he received early on. He also hasn’t won a fight since 2017, going 0-2-1 in his last three fights, including a lousy effort in Jan. 2019 in a decision loss to Manny Pacquiao.

That said, Broner’s made a lot of money and absolutely has his fans, who will tune in to see him. A fight at 140, say, between Haney and Broner would do some business, and AB would be by far the biggest name that Haney has faced to date.

As for Broner saying he can make 135, I can’t say for sure because I’m not him, but odds are against it. He hasn’t made that weight since 2013.

If this does happen, it won’t be until summer at the earliest, but it’s out there, and it’s something to keep in mind as a possibility.
